Ana Cláudia Almeida
1993 | Rio de Janeiro – RJ
bio
She lives and works in New Haven, United States.
Ana Cláudia Almeida’s material universe is based on the manipulation of paints, plastics, oil sticks, fabrics and images. The fluttering appearance of her works on cloth, the accumulative and shifting nature of the sculpture and the kaleidoscopic fragmentation of the large-scale paintings transpose and translate intangible memory into matter. This dimension is felt both on the surface of the works, as Almeida allows traces of previous gestures to remain in the final form, and in a conceptual and symbolic way. Made up of intense superimpositions of full and empty spaces, the abstraction that defines the works on display resonates with the visual and conceptual depth of his work, which formally and thematically mirrors layers of memory, practices and rituals.
His recent solo exhibitions include Over Again, Stephen Friedman Gallery, New York (2025); Guandu Paraguaçu Piraquara, Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2023); Holes, Craters and Hugs, Quadra, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2021); Wasapindorama, Niterói Art Foundation, Niterói, Brazil (2018). In 2024, Almeida took part, together with the artist Tadáskía, in the exhibitions Ana Cláudia Almeida & Tadáskía , simultaneously at the galleries Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel and Quadra, in São Paulo, Brazil, and Tadáskía and Ana Cláudia Almeida: A Joyner/Giuffrida Visiting Artists Programat the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada, United States. The artist was also part of the group exhibitions Alvorada, Dover Street Market, Paris (2025); A Poeira Terrível, Quadra, São Paulo (2025); Essay on Landscape, Inhotim Institute, Brumadinho, Brazil (2024); Look at the mountains, Quadra, São Paulo, Brazil (2024); Essas Pessoas na Sala de Jantar, Eva Kablin House Museum, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2023); Crônicas Cariocas, Rio Art Museum, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2021) and Casa Carioca, Rio Art Museum, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2021).
